A surge in freight costs ----
The Baltic Exchange quoted West Africa to Asia spot VLCC rates at $142,900 per day at the end of last week, up 27% in seven days.
Spot VLCC earnings from Fujairah in the UAE have eased to just below $180,000 per day, down from close to $300,000 earlier in March.
Suezmax and aframax rates continue to move higher, with the market increasingly driven by disrupted trade flows and west-east arbitrage, however.
Tonne-miles are rising, and more tonnage is being pulled east.
Aframaxes on the US Gulf to Europe route are now earning around $235,000 per day, above Middle East VLCC levels.
