Maruti small car project was originally that of Sanjay Gandhi who , it seems , had a stint as apprentice in Rolls Royce. His dream car never really took off. His company was named Maruti Limited.
After Sanjay's death to salvage his reputation a completely new small car project but at original land /factory at Gurgaon ,of Sanjay Gandhi 's Maruti Limited , was taken in collaboration with Suzuki.
The new and presently thriving car company was Maruti Udyog Limited.( now renamed Maruti Suzuki India Limited) , a totally different corporate entity from Sanjay Gandhi's Maruti Limited
